My dad’s cancer and why I do what I do

Life. I do not fear death. What I do fear is not really living and I fear suffering.

It is said that death is one of the top fears people experience. The fear of death. I think in most cases what people fear is the suffering they associate with dying.

My message today is one of complete compassion and love. Why I do what I do is that I want people to realize that they are in control, and that they have the power to make their life the BEST it can be. No more excuses – no more “waiting until”, no more saying “you don’t know where to start”, no more “it is too hard”, no more “it is too expensive”.

Put health first because it is EVERYTHING! It is everything to you and your loved ones.

Mom, dad and me – happy hour – something they have done ever since I can remember. The beer before dinner. Talking, connecting and enjoying the sunshine!

Many of you know that my dad is battling cancer. He has bone cancer. It is painful and it spreads. He is the nicest, sweetest, kindest, most generous and loving man. Truly, he does not judge people – he never has. He is so accepting. He is a quiet man and I have only heard him lose his temper a few times (which in fact may not be that good as he has suppressed a lot).

I am in Alberta right now visiting him, my mom and my daughter (along with other family). His health has been up and down a lot lately. Sometimes really bad and sometimes not so bad. The past few days he has been really good. He is going through chemo (again). Not that I agree with chemo but it is his decision and he has such a strong will to live. He is doing better than the doctors expected and they are quite shocked so I am very grateful for that.

Having me as a daughter you think things would be different but I have spent many, many conversations with my mom and dad talking about what I think he “should” do but have found out that it doesn’t help. I have to respect his wishes and his decisions and I do now. He is from a different generation and listens and believes all that the doctors say.

I love him so much and I chose to spend the time I have with him in a peaceful, calm and loving way, accepting and respecting his wishes and actions. This has make things so much better.

He is scared and who knows what I would be like if faced with what he is going through. I can guess but I really don’t know for sure. I am loving and cherishing every minute, each moment is very special.

The thing is, he is suffering. I hate seeing that. I hate seeing anyone (or animal) suffer. It is crazy how so many people work so hard and for so long waiting to finally get the chance to do what they want “when they retire”. Not even thinking – “what if when I retire I am sick and unhealthy and can’t do anything?” Nope we don’t want to think about that.

I am all for positive thinking and manifesting your life the way you want it – but that also means taking the “right action”. If you are not taking care of yourself, if you are not eating healthy nutrient-dense foods, thinking good thoughts, loving yourself and others – then you are leaving way too many things to chance and by the time you are finally “ready to retire” – you may be unhealthy and unable to do anything you planned.

Then all you can do is look back and say “I should have…….” “If only I knew this was going to happen to me I would have done things differently.” Well….too late.

I am sure many of you know people like that and we all talk about how sad it is. But really, that could be you. Think about it! It really could!

BUT…..GREAT NEWS!! You have the power prevent that. It is up to you and only you!

You CAN live your life with health, vitality, passion, joy, energy and do all the amazing things you want to do. Experience all you want to experience. Retire and travel the world, build a home on a lake, hike the West Coast Trail, dance the night away, play with your grandchildren, keep your independence, do yoga every day, relax and enjoy your summers at your cabin, ski all winter – whatever you want to do!

You can maintain the perfect weight for you, look youthful, gain muscle, meditate and feel younger than you have for years. You can start that now!

Don’t wait for someone to do it for you or please don’t leave it for chance. Take care of yourself now.

Put health and happiness for YOU first NOW. Why wait?

My parents were not bad eaters and they do “their best” to take care of themselves. They always had a large garden. They did what they knew. My mom is the cook. She doesn’t like change. She sticks with what she knows and she doesn’t see the correlation between food and health. Or energy and health – at all. They believe everything the doctor says. That is what they know and that is who they are. They don’t have internet (never have) and do not read books on health.

My dad worked and always had his hobbies (building and wood working), my mom cooked, cleaned and gardened (and worked full time for years). When we grew up they took great care of us and were always loving, caring parents who spent a lot of quality time with us.

They love me and pretend to listen to what I say (about supplements, super foods, healthy foods and eating) but it seems complicated and confusing (and I totally understand that it can be). My mom likes routine and believes she is too old to change. Too old to try different things and since she is the one making all the food and buying all the groceries – nothing changes.

Watching my dad go through all he has is incredibly hard for me and I cannot tell you how much I have to bite my lip.

When I go to visit I bring “my strange food”  and my mom looks at it and sees it as something “I do” and maybe a few other “health nuts” but “normal people could not do that.” My dad is definitely more open about things.

I love them both so much and my mom is very, very kind and giving but she does not do change. And when someone gets really sick – change needs to happen.

Seeing my dad like this really fuels my passion for what I do. I know that so much illness, disease and suffering is unnecessary. It bothers me so much that people think they have no choice or no power over their health or suffering.

I am not just talking food here – I am talking about food, your mindset and the energy you surround yourself with and allow into you. Holistic health – mind, body and soul.

There are so, so many resources out there to use. Just because you feel “fine” now doesn’t mean it will stay that way forever. If you are not taking care of yourself now – or if you know someone who isn’t – please take action and start doing something now.

RECIPE FOR THE WEEK!

KALE CAESAR SALAD

  • 2 C of chopped kale (flat leaf kale works best for this, but curly is fine also)
  • 1 Tbsp hemp hearts or sunflower seeds
  • 2 Tbsp chopped green onion
  • 4 grape tomatoes cut in half
Salad Dressing:
  • 1/2 C raw cashews (soaked for 1 hour, rinsed then drained)
  • 3/4 C water
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 1/4 C hemp seeds
  • 1/4 C nutritional yeast
  • 3 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 clove of garlic
  • 1 tsp agave (leave out if avoiding sweetener)
  • 1/2 tsp mustard (or mustard powder)
  • 1/4 tsp salt and pepper
Blend above ingredients in blender until smooth. Stopping to scrape sides and stirring.
Add salad ingredients to a bowl, stir in some of the dressing. The dressing will absorb into the kale so it is best to let the dressing sit on the salad for about 15-30 minutes (or longer). Taste and add more dressing if needed.
TRY: You can also sprinkle some more nutritional yeast on the salad after it is mixed or grind up some dry cashews (or sunflower seeds) with some nutritional yeast and salt and use that like parmesan cheese to sprinkle on (it is really good!).
