DETOXING FROM CHRISTMAS BAKING!
I hope that you all had a FABULOUS CHRISTMAS!!
Did you eat too many of the wrong things over the holidays? Chocolate, candies, cookies, baking, pies, cakes, heavy, fatty foods? Yikes! When I was growing up Christmas was a time for family (extended family so a lot of people), fun, sledding, snowmobiling, skating on outdoor ponds, carolling after drinking far too much liquor, playing games with cousins, serving food, doing dishes, eating, snacking, eating, snacking, etc, etc. There was an abundance of food and we ate it. We celebrated Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. I can’t even imagine how much sugar was consumed over that time period.
Even though our Christmas celebrations are much smaller now, the food is still there, in abundance. Day after day after day during the holiday season.
MY BODY IS BEGGING ME TO DETOX!! And I am listening to it.
My boyfriend and I drove to Osoyoos (BC) to be with my parents and one of my sisters. We also visited my other sister and her family in Kelowna, BC. It was a lot of driving and of course a lot of eating.
I was in such a rush when we left for our trip that I forgot my blender. I had planned to bring it so I could have green smoothies every day. I also thought I would be better at eating clean when I was gone. But…….chocolate and cookies (Christmas baking) were my weakness. These have always been my weakness. The chocolate and baking are everywhere during the season. My logic was that because I do not eat it (cookies that is) during the rest of the year, it wouldn’t hurt to have a few of these at Christmas? Well, a few?!…….I had more than a few.
How did that make me feel? Wow, so tired!! I felt very tired and lazy. My skin actually broke out!
It is very clear how much better I feel when I eat good. I was looking forward to getting back and having my green smoothies, juices and my favorite salads. I didn’t realize how important my eating routine at home is and how much my body likes it.
Traveling is hard on my digestion but add all that sugar and foods I don’t normally eat and that leads to disaster!! I have been home a few days now and am loving healthy eating!! Of course I am back at the gym again which is also really helping.
The first things I had when I got home was a green smoothie. I LOVE MY GREEN SMOOTHIE!!! I had one with kale, spinach, mango, banana and an apple. So good…..My body was smiling on the inside.
I have been eating and loving salads, drinking lots of lemon water, enjoying my buckwheat/chia/nutra-cleanse/coconut breakfast (recipe in a previous post) and of course my green smoothies. I WILL NEVER LEAVE MY BLENDER AGAIN!!!
I will share my favorite salad with you (I have had this 2 days in a row and will have it again tomorrow and maybe all next week)
- Herb salad mixture
- 1/2 avocado
- 1/2 – 3/4 C of wakame
- shredded carrots
- bell peppers
- grape tomatoes
The dressing I use is very simple. It is 1/2 tbsp of braggs, 1/2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar, squeeze of lemon and 1 tbsp of olive oil.
At times I add some of these ingredients: sprouts, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, parsley, cilantro, cabbage
HOW DO I FEEL NOW? So, so, so much better!! What a great way to start the New Year!!!!
If you have not had a green smoothie before or if you have tried one but still do not have one every day I urge you to PLEASE MAKE IT A HABIT TO HAVE ONE EVERY MORNING. Two would be great, but one is a fantastic start!!
Another thing I noticed while spending Christmas with my family is how influenced we are by the people around us. If they don’t eat that healthy, then we don’t feel so bad if we don’t eat healthy.
I often hear people say it is so hard to eat healthy because they live with people who do not eat healthy. That is an excuse, that is all it is. Also, don’t try to change the other people. That never works. Start with yourself. You are the one who needs to decide that it is time for you to change. Don’t wait or expect others to change along with you. Don’t wait for anyone else to start this with. No more excuses! JUST START!
Make little changes every day. Don’t over think what you are doing, just do. Don’t make it a big deal. Start with a green smoothie. Start with a glass of warm water with freshly squeezed organic lemon in it. Slowly decrease your sugar intake, the fatty foods in your diet, the junk food, the cookies, the chocolate, the coffee.
I can GUARANTEE that you will feel better. This is a sure thing.
