HALLOWEEN TREATS….Please beware…

I loved Halloween as a kid, but now…I kind of dread it. The dangers of Halloween candy, in fact most colored candy full of sugar, preservatives and food dyes, really FRIGHTEN ME!!! If only bobbing for apples were enough but….it is the candy that gets the kids out there going house to house.

Isn’t that sooooo cool!!! Although, hard to put in a kid’s Halloween Bag when they come to your door. But a great snack!! Have your child make one.

I am a huge advocate for healthy eating for kids and I do talks and presentations on this topic. The awareness is getting out there and more and more parents and teachers are realizing the detrimental affect that food dyes, MSG and other preservatives and chemicals have on children’s health, emotions, agression level, brain development, weight, concentration, etc.

I became aware of the problems associated with all the food dyes and preservatives in candy and foods (even in restaurants) when I realized that those were the cause of many of very uncomfortable symptoms I was experiencing. The symptoms I have experienced and still do are: headaches, muscle tension, muscles aches, nausea, sinus congestion, fatigue, inability to concentrate or focus, muscle weakness, TMJ symptoms and probably more.

We are all exposed to so many toxins each and every day. It is a shame we cannot even go to a restaurant (most anyways) and eat a clean meal. Because of the many sensitivities I have, I need to ask the waitors and cooks (at every restaurant) what is in every sauce, dip, seasoning, etc of what I would like to order, I know that preservatives are in everything! Don’t be fooled. I even eat a high raw diet so you can imagine! When I didn’t I was sick all the time.

Now….think about the kids! I look at all the packaged, boxed foods and snacks that are “for kids” in the grocery stores and I am HORRIFIED!!! They are the WORST and we are supposed to give these to our kids! Just crazy. Please READ ALL LABELS.

A couple great resource sites are www.feingold.or and www.allergykids.com. See for yourself the symptoms and problems that can occur with children who consume these “fake foods”. How they affect them and how they could and probably will affect them in the future. You may not even realize that some symptoms or things your kids experience (or you) are due to food dyes and preservatives.

Below is information I got from the site: www.allergykids.com:

In the last 20 years, there has been a HUGE increase in allergies, asthma, ADHD and autism:

  • 400% incrase in food allergies
  • 300% increase in asthma, with 56% increase in asthma deaths
  • 400% increase in ADHD
  • Between a 1,500 and 6,000% increase in autism (OK – THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL!!!!)

Allergic reactions to foods could show up in some of these symptoms so watch for them:

  • Mouth – itching, tingling or swelling of lips, tongue, mouth
  • Skin – Hives, itchy rash, swelling of the face or extremities
  • Gut – Nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Throat – Hacking cough, tightening of throat, hoarseness
  • Lung – Shortness of breath, repetitive cough, wheezing
  • Heart – Thready pulsse, low blood pressure, fainting, pale, blueness
  • Mental – Sudden quietness or decreased responsiveness

The site also explains that

“Because 70% of our immune system is found in our digestive tracts, the foods that we eat and the chemicals that they contain can have a significant impact on our health.

As these chemicals in foods work through a child’s digestive system, they can corrode his or her “pipes” in much the same way that chemical toxins corrode plumbing! This ‘chemical corrosion’ of the digestive tract can leave a child vulnerable to a host of auto-immune disorders, including allergies, asthma, Celiac’s disease and other conditions.”

Pretty amazing isn’t it? But when you think about it – it makes perfect sense. We ALL need to watch what we eat ALL the time. Be a good example for your kids. Live a long and healthy life so you can be there for them. You don’t want to rely on them to care for you when they are raising their own families. Stay healthy and be there to babysite and play with your grandchildren and hopefully keep your health and independence for a very long time.

During this HALLOWEEN WEEKEND, make healthy choices. Do the best you can. Love your kids and enjoy the fun of the night with them – it just not about the candy. I think a big part of why kids love it also is because they get to dress up and be “someone or something else”. Kids love using their imagination and playing and running. How often do they really do that anymore? Play with them, dress up with them, laugh and scream with them and get out and get some FRESH AIR!!
